The
last time I had to review a game, I wasn't the same. The game was Solitare
Pack and the
developer was none other than Stand Alone, Inc. Well, once again my
friends at Stand Alone have revived a classic for Palm. And now, after
some sleepless nights "playing", here are the fruits of my effort.
If you
haven't guessed, Drop 'Em is the Palm version of the very addictive
Tetris. I hadn't spent much time playing Tetris since Gameboy made it
popular when I was in Jr. High School. The rust was very evident when
I started my first game.
Now
I don't want to imply that Drop 'Em is terribly difficult, but I had
a tough time getting used to the default button control settings. Fortunately,
the fun factor took an immediate turn for the better when I discovered
that these settings are user configurable. Menu- Options- Controls will
allow you to configure all the buttons to your liking. I chose to have
AddressBook and MemoPad control the left and right movement respectively,
and AddressBook and ToDo as the rotational buttons. The important thing
is that you set it to your taste. Once you have Drop 'Em configured,
it is every bit the game that Tetris made popular. And it's every bit
as addicting.
High
scores are permenantly recorded and I found myself pushing for higher
and higher scores. I did find a few minor bugs in Drop 'Em. First, if
during a game you decide to view your High Scores, alter preferences,
or change your button configuration, when you return to the game, the
New and Pause/Continue buttons disappear. While this doesn't affect
the game in any way, it does mean that you have to blindly poke around
to access one of these functions. The buttons are there and they still
work, but you just can't see them. Also, occationally When I tapped
the pause button, it the game would pause, but the button wouldn't switch
to say "Continue". When I hit the button again to resume the game, it
would get momentarily "confused" and temporarily lock up the game. This
was never longer than a few seconds and after that, the game would resume
as normal, but they are bugs none the less and ones to look out for.
Despite these few bugs, I thought Drop 'Em functioned as I had remembered
and like I said, they're nothing major.
Stand
Alone, Inc. has once again revived a classic game and turned it into
a highly entertaining solution to boredom. Sometimes you don't appreciate
thing until after the fact, and I think that's the case with Drop
'Em. This game is truely a classic and definately something to keep
on your Palm. Whether you're killing time before a meeting, making
a long flight less monotonous or keeping the kids quiet on family
trips, you'll definately get your money's worth out of Drop 'Em.
